August’s Sturgeon Moon ~ A deep dive within

August 27th: PDT 21:18 | August 28th: EDT 00:18 | BST 05:18

Welcome Moon Lovers. After tuning into last month’s Full Buck Moon, we now bring our attention to the Sturgeon Moon of August and explore the lunar eclipse that accompanies it. This is the second of our two August eclipses and it’s in Pisces; the sign of the fish – but what does all this mean? Let’s find out…

In this blog, we’ll unpack:

Named after the abundance of sturgeon fish that were found in the Great Lakes in North America at this time of year, the Sturgeon Moon seems to shine especially bright for us in the sign of Pisces this month, guiding us through the shifting tides.

And this is no ordinary Full Moon either, as it brings a lunar eclipse. For a lunar eclipse to take place, the Moon, Earth and Sun align and the Earth casts a shadow on the moon. August brings a deep partial lunar eclipse and from our vantage point on Earth, it may give the Moon a reddish orange appearance. It will be visible from the UK and Ireland, North and South America, Africa and other parts of Europe.

What does a Lunar Eclipse symbolise?

A lunar eclipse can only take place during the Full Moon phase. Symbolically, a lunar eclipse takes on the qualities of a Full Moon, but these qualities are heightened. A lunar eclipse will speak to whatever is coming to fruition, culmination or release, which may require more information to be truly understood. The energy can be experienced as intense, but just as the Moon’s light is eclipsed and then returns to full illumination; we must remember that it is possible to move through shifts to find a clearer, more aligned path.

What will this Lunar Eclipse in Pisces bring?

The water sign of Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac. In these dreamy depths we can connect to our intuition, embrace our inner world and reconnect with our imagination. The energy is soft, compassionate and meditative. However, a lunar eclipse and its unpredictable nature can stir the waters up into choppy seas, illuminating a shift or change that may, inevitably, need to come from within.

The Full Moon’s conversation with Uranus, the Great Awakener, suggests that this may not be the fluid, dreamlike unfolding that Pisces prefers, but perhaps an unexpected chance for release or surrender to make way for something new.

This type of illumination may not feel smooth, but we can embrace the traditional ruler of this Piscean Moon, Jupiter, sitting happily in Leo. Although Jupiter’s influence is subdued, the planet is still well positioned, attempting to bring a little optimism through any clouds. The Sun is still close to Mercury in Virgo, helping us to find our way through any mental fog. With this being a north node eclipse, there’s also a sense of something new asking for space to emerge or expand.

Perhaps a dream or hope you’ve been harbouring is ready to be made manifest -- but something needs to change for that to happen?

However the energy feels for you, take a deep breath friends and consider this full Moon as a moment to pause and search within. July and August have been very busy months astrologically. This lunar eclipse is our reminder to slow down, reconnect to our intuition and try to navigate any internal or external shifts in our lives from an intuitive place.

How to harness Lunar Eclipse energy:

  • Ground yourself: If the atmosphere around you feels unsettled or a little chaotic, focus on whatever helps you to feel grounded. Deep breaths, one moment at a time. Steadying the body or calming the mind with meditation, or simply quiet time, may work well.
  • Notice new information: Lunar eclipses can help us to see which doors may be closing so that new ones can open. Watch for what may be revealed and listen to your intuition.
  • Tune into what’s reaching completion or coming to fruition: What feels like it’s reached a natural ending point or is culminating now? This may give you an idea of what is ready to be released.
  • Channel your energy: If the energy feels high for you around the eclipse, try to channel it into something creative or imaginative.
  • Pay attention to your dreams: Pisces energy encourages us to look inwards. Make a note of any dreams you have and write them down.

The extent to which you may feel eclipse energy will depend on your own planetary placements, and whilst you may not notice major change at an eclipse, it is worth jotting down events, situations, or shifts that come up so that you can look back and spot any seeds that were planted.
