Fanning the Flames – Your Mini Guide to the Fire Signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

Fanning the Flames – Your Mini Guide to the Fire Signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

If Aries, Leo or Sagittarius feature strongly in your birth chart, you've come to the right place. Here's your Moon Phase Studios mini guide to help you explore their fiery energy.

In this blog, we'll explore the qualities of:

The astrological wheel spans twelve signs (or constellations) of the zodiac. As we move through the year, the Sun completes its tour of all the different signs, creating Sun seasons. The Sun seasons of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius arrive at different times of the year, but they all have one element in common, fire.

If your Sun sign (aka star sign), Moon or rising sign is Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, you may find the qualities of that particular sign are more heightened in your life. It's worth getting to know these zodiac energies to help you delve deeper into your own astrology.

What is a fire sign in astrology?

Whilst every sign is linked to an element, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are the signs known as the fire triplicity. The element of fire gives us important information about the nature of this feisty threesome.

Although each expresses fire differently, they all carry a bright inner flame. Their energy can act as a beacon, bringing courage, charisma, warmth, action and transformation wherever it's needed. Each sign also has its shadow, but we'll get into that later…

Fire tells us a great deal about these signs, but it's not the whole story. Where each sign falls in the astrological calendar also reveals something about its unique qualities and how its energy is expressed.

Let's explore each sign in its light and shadow…

Aries (20th March – 19th April)*

Aries, first in line of all the zodiac signs and ruled by the action-oriented planet Mars, reminds us not only of our inner warrior but also our sense of childlike wonder. As the first sign of the zodiac, the sign carries a youthful enthusiasm and willingness to begin anew. Aries season marks the beginning of the Sun's journey around the zodiac at the spring equinox - a time of hope, rebirth and awakening.

Aries energy blends bright optimism with an energetic motivation to start afresh. This can make for an exciting rollercoaster ride of passion, excitement, courage and assertiveness. Known as a tropical (or, in modern astrology, cardinal) sign because it initiates a turning point in the seasons, Aries can take the lead, be bold and step up.

The shadow side of this sign can tip towards a quick temper, overly competitive tendencies, impulsivity and impatience. When this happens, the lesson for Aries is often to recognise other people's needs as well as their own. Sometimes Aries just needs to slow down a little and accept that learning to pause can be just as courageous as taking action.

Leo (22nd July – 22nd August) *

Shining brightly, Leo energy is here to champion how we can feel confident and at ease with ourselves. Happy to hold the centre, just as its ruler, our life-giving Sun, does, Leo brings the joy, glamour and warmth of summer into our lives.

Courage, loyalty and confidence are a natural part of this sign's promise, and those with prominent Leo placements often exude charisma and creative flair while encouraging others to shine their light by unapologetically shining their own. This energy invites us to celebrate our creativity and generosity, and to explore how we can live from the heart.

Leo is known as a solid (or fixed) sign, reflected in its steady, radiant presence. It doesn't always seek the spotlight, but more often than not, it naturally finds it. Leo encourages us to honour what makes our hearts sing and to be proud of what we have achieved.

The shadow side of this sign can show as being overly self-focused, a constant need for external validation, or a tendency towards unchecked pride. If this happens, the invitation for Leo is to remember that true confidence shines brightest when shared with others. Their life-giving energy is always much needed.

Sagittarius (22nd November – 20th December) *

Ruled by Jupiter, the planet of optimism and opportunity, Sagittarius infuses us with a jubilant, abundant energy. This fire sign's season arrives after we have swum the deeply intense waters of Scorpio and asks us to rise out of the depths in search of light and warmth.

Those with prominent Sagittarius placements often bring a healthy dose of joy and love into the room. An open-minded approach to life's adventures is a Sagittarian superpower, inspiring others and following the spark of truth wherever it leads. This is a double-bodied (or mutable) sign that encourages a flexible, open-minded approach, celebrating going with the flow and finding the fun.

The shadow side of this sign can be a tendency to overindulge, display a lack of caution, or become overly idealistic. If this shows up, the lesson for Sagittarius is to avoid burning the candle at both ends (where possible!) and to remember that whilst we may all strive for our ideals, everyone moves at their own pace.

But we need your optimism, Sagittarius -- keep shining it out!
