How to work with May’s Full Moon in Scorpio

May 1st | PDT 10:23 | EDT 13:23 | BST 18:23

The Full Moon illuminating the beginning of May is known as the Flower Moon. It signals that the natural world is coming into bloom; days are getting longer, and balmy summer evenings beckon. This year, it falls on the same day as the Celtic festival of Beltane, signifying a heady mix…

The astrological sign that this Full Moon appears in is the water sign of Scorpio. This is the first of two Full Moons this month, so May carries an extra charge of lunar energy - but what does this first one have to reveal to us? Let’s dive into her watery depths together…

In this blog, we’ll explore:

The symbolism of the sign of Scorpio

The water sign of Scorpio holds many mysteries. Ruled by two powerhouse planets - Mars in ancient astrology and Pluto in modern astrology - Scorpio energy is deep, intense, and direct. In ancient astrology, the Moon is said to be in her ‘fall’ in Scorpio, meaning that she is less comfortable here - but it is where she has important work to do; facing her shadows and meeting them squarely, not with judgement, but with acceptance.

Unafraid to go deeper, to transform, and to perform self-alchemy, Scorpio has a laser-like focus that can instinctively call out insincerity and uncover the truth of a situation. The passionate nature of Scorpio energy can feel intense, but it is this depth that invites a deeper knowing and enables change from within.

Beneath the surface…

This Full Moon carries an intensity that simmers beneath the surface, offering an opportunity for growth through deeper reflection and intuitive awareness. Elsewhere in the skies, there is planetary support to help you feel your way through this. I especially like that Chiron and Mercury are conjunct at the time of the Full Moon, suggesting that healing conversations may be easier to initiate.

Major shifts

This Full Moon is the first since Uranus moved into Gemini, offering a natural pause point. With this significant planetary shift, a new cycle has begun. Take some time under this Full Moon to slow down, go inward, and sense what may be changing for you now…

Ways to work with the Full Moon in Scorpio:

  • Take some quiet time: Light a candle, get comfortable, and focus on your breath. Carve out a moment to simply ‘be’ and check in with how you are feeling.
  • Listen to your intuition: This is a powerful Moon for creating space for your inner voice. You might work with tarot or oracle cards, astrology, crystals, or any practice that helps you feel connected to your inner knowing.
  • Decorate your altar or sacred space: If you feel called to honour both the Full Moon and Beltane, you might adorn your space accordingly. Fresh flowers and nature connected crystals are lovely for Beltane. For the Scorpio Full Moon, consider a black or deep red candle. Work with what you are drawn to.
  • Awaken your sensual self: With the fire of Beltane and the depth of Scorpio weaving together, this is a time to reconnect with your senses and your body. Let yourself soften into pleasure in simple, meaningful ways - plan a date night, spend time in nature, or wander somewhere that feels alive and open. Remember to honour your needs and make space for what truly nourishes you. (This is Taurus season, after all.)
  • Focus on release and renewal: If you feel ready to let go of old energy and welcome a sense of renewal, write a list of what you wish to release. You might gather with your trusted circle around a fire pit and safely burn your list under the light of the Moon - or do this quietly on your own if you prefer.

Journal prompts for working with the Full Moon in Scorpio:

  • What am I ready to release or let go of?
  • What is my intuition asking me to notice?
  • What feels as though it’s beginning to awaken within me and how will I honour this?
