Full Moon Ritual Guide ~ How to Harness Full Moon Energy

How to Harness Full Moon Energy

Here at Moon Phase Studios, we love a Full Moon. There is something truly magical about gazing up and seeing the Moon at its pinnacle, shining brightly and guiding our path. At each Full Moon we are offered a powerful opportunity to reflect, release what no longer serves us, and celebrate what is coming to fruition. Read on to find out how we can put this into practice and harness the true power of this magical moon phase…

In this blog, we’ll discover:

A Full Moon is created by the Sun on one side of the heavens and the Moon on the opposite side. The Moon reflects the Sun’s light as they make this opposition. It is this balance of both the Sun and the Moon, at the halfway point of the lunar cycle, that works together to give us a fully illuminated Moon.

Both the Sun and the Moon are in opposite signs of the zodiac at this point. For example, if we experience a Full Moon in Capricorn, the Sun will be in Cancer - the opposite sign to Capricorn in the zodiac wheel. At a Full Moon, we can appreciate the energy of both signs as they connect across the heavens.

What does a Full Moon symbolise?

The Full Moon is considered both a culmination and a release point of the lunar cycle in Moonology and astrology. Whilst the fullness of the Moon can symbolise heightened emotions and the opportunity to release what feels heavy, it can also be a time of gratitude and appreciation for what is coming to fruition.

Honouring the Full Moon can become a monthly event when we work with the lunar cycle. A Full Moon reminds us to pause, look up, and pay attention to what is being illuminated in our lives. It also gives us a cosmic nudge to practise self-care and remember what we are grateful for.

How can I tune into Full Moon energy?

When we work in harmony with the Moon’s energetic rhythm, we can find more balance within our lives. To attune to the Full Moon, we can create a ritual that honours this potent peak of the lunar cycle.

The Full Moon is a time of great power and significance astrologically, so it makes sense to harness it as much as possible. Rituals are a method of formalising this process, giving us a structure and routine to work with.

We’re going to explore a simple way to honour the Full Moon. Remember, this isn’t prescriptive. One of the Moon’s significators is intuition, so listen to your intuition when it comes to honouring the Full Moon and see what feels good for you.

The energy of the Full Moon is thought to be most potent the night before, the night of, and the night after, so you have about three days to work directly with this part of the lunar cycle. You may wish to carry out your ritual solo or with your trusted circle, whichever feels right.

What Do I Need for a Full Moon Ritual?

  • Candle
  • Cleansing tools (e.g. smudge stick, essential oils and diffuser, or incense)
  • Items that help you feel connected to the Moon (optional)
  • Piece of paper
  • Journal and pen

Our suggestion for a ritual is based around the pioneering work of Moonologer Yasmin Boland but largely incorporates approaches we’ve found useful in our own practice.

Your Seven Step Full Moon Ritual Guide

Step 1. Prepare your sacred space

Retreat to your calm, private space. You may wish to adorn this space with things that are meaningful to you, perhaps some crystals, oracle cards, or something that connects you to the energy of the Moon.

You can prepare the space by cleansing it. You may wish to diffuse some essential oils, use a smudge stick, or burn some incense. You can even play some beautiful music, which can also heighten the vibration before your ritual.

Step 2. Get centred

Since there’s a lot of energy at this stage of the lunar cycle, it’s helpful to bring tranquillity into your space. Light a candle to mark the beginning of the ritual and take a comfortable seat. Relax and take a few deep, cleansing breaths. Feel the glow of the candlelight and the stillness of the moment as you settle into your sacred space.

Step 3. Reflect and write

Take some time to reflect on the period since the last New Moon. What has come to fruition since then? Which qualities of the zodiac sign that the Full Moon is in feel illuminated in your life now?

Capture this in your journal.

You may also wish to reflect on an idea, habit, or thought pattern that you’d like to let go of, or a person or situation you’d like to forgive. List on your piece of paper.

If this feels challenging right now, give yourself time. This may take a few lunar cycles to work with.

Step 4. Acknowledge and release

If you have written down something or someone you’d like to release or forgive under the Full Moon, state out loud, or in your mind, what you're releasing or who you are forgiving. Remember to state this in the present tense:

‘Under this Full Moon, I forgive...'

‘Under this Full Moon, I release...'

using your list as a guide.

Now burn the list safely, outside and under the light of the Moon if possible. (If you are inside, you may wish to do this over a sink.) As the paper burns, imagine letting go of all you have written down and surrendering it to the cosmos. As you do this, you may also wish to say some words that feel important to you.

Step 5. Practise gratitude

It’s important to come back to a place of gratitude after release work. Write down three things you are grateful for. Read your statements of gratitude out loud and feel the gratitude in your heart as you say them.

If you’d like to spend some more time exploring how you are feeling, spend a few minutes journaling. Remember, each Full Moon in the Moon Phase Studios Journal has a page dedicated to it, so you can let the pen flow.

Step 6. Enjoy some quiet time

Let your body relax for a few minutes. As you do this, ground yourself in your own energy and feel your connection to everything around you. Take a few steady breaths.

Step 7. Blow out the candle

This marks the end of the ritual.

Your Full Moon ritual is now complete.

Take a moment to feel what you experienced and let that resonance settle into your being. If you can, over the next 24 hours follow your ritual with something that feels nourishing, perhaps a walk in nature or a relaxing bath.

Working with the lunar cycle takes practice, and the shifts you have initiated may take time to integrate. Please move forward in the knowledge that you have honoured yourself and the Moon with your work.

Full Moon Journaling Prompts:

Moon rituals are simple, effective, and sacred ways to become more aware of your connection to yourself and to the cosmos. Each time we attune to the Moon, we can strengthen our intuitive self, create space to find calm, and let go.

If you don’t have time for a complete Full Moon ritual but would still like to honour the energy, you can simply take a few minutes to look up at the Moon and consider one of these questions:

  • What is coming to fruition in my life now?
  • What am I truly grateful for?
  • How can I release what feels heavy?

Each Full Moon offers a new opportunity to reconnect with yourself, honour your journey, and trust the wisdom that is already within you. Enjoy it!
