Getting grounded – Your Mini Guide to the Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn

In this blog series, we’ve already explored the fire and air signs of the zodiac, but are you ready to dig deep into the rich earth energies of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn? If any of these signs form part of your ‘Big Three’, otherwise known as your Sun, Moon or rising sign, then this guide is for you…

In this blog, we'll explore the qualities of:

As we move through the year, the Sun lights up different signs of the zodiac, creating Sun seasons. Although the sun seasons of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn arrive at different times of the year, they all share the common element of earth.

If your Sun sign (also known as your star sign), Moon or rising sign is in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn, you may notice the qualities of that sign more deeply in your life. How those qualities are expressed will change through the lens of where the sign sits within your ‘Big Three’ (and many other factors), but we can still grasp the fundamentals by exploring the basics of how these signs operate.

What is an earth sign in astrology?

Whilst every sign is linked to an element, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are the signs known as the earth triplicity. The element of earth gives us important information about the nature of this grounded trio. Where each sign falls in the astrological year also tells us something about its unique qualities and how this energy manifests.

Although each expresses their earth element differently, they all share a unique ability to hold, support and build from the roots up. This earth energy can help you to ground, listen to your body and recognise when a practical and resilient approach is needed. In the interests of being balanced, let’s also get a little curious at the shadow side of each sign. Are you ready? Let’s begin…

Taurus (20th April – 20th May) *

When Taurus season arrives, it’s time to feel the magic of the earth beneath our feet, daylight is increasing (in the northern hemisphere), we are approaching summer, and nature is starting to flourish. This connection to the natural world runs deep within this earth sign, often expressed through a love of nature or being outdoors.

To feel that life is rich with abundance is important to Taurus’s sense of security, as is slowing down and taking time to build foundations that will last. Taurus is a solid (or fixed) sign, depicted by the bull, reflecting Taurus’s ability to cultivate stamina, strength and determination. There is a deep groundedness that accompanies this degree of fortitude. Being in the presence of a contented Taurus can be one of the most peaceful experiences you’ll ever have.

As a Venus–ruled sign, the sensual side to Taurus is heightened with a strong connection to the body’s desire for pleasure and comfort. Whether it’s an appreciation of the finer things in life, indulgent romantic interludes, or standing barefoot on the earth, the body becomes a temple where all senses are ready to be awakened.

Taurus is so in tune with being grounded that it can be challenging to re-energise and a refusal to budge can creep in! A shadow side to this sign can manifest as being resistant to change or finding it difficult to compromise. Taurus’s lesson is to acknowledge that change and letting go doesn’t have to be scary, in fact, it can be part of clearing the way for the next foundation to be lovingly built.

Virgo (23rd August – 22nd September) *

As the last golden rays of summer fall across the landscape, the seasons whisper change and the Sun moves into Virgo. This time of year instils this double-bodied (also known as mutable) sign with a strong ability to welcome transition, imbuing its energy with a flexible, adaptable approach.

This is magnified by Virgo’s ruler Mercury, bringing a communicative and analytical focus that helps Virgo’s quick mind pay attention to every detail. This discerning energy can be especially helpful when deciding to focus on what truly matters and let go of what doesn’t, especially when preparing for change. Decluttering is everything – and Virgo can take this to new levels!

But there is much more to this sign than crossing off items on the ‘to do’ list. Virgo finds meaning in being of service to others and can help to refine the everyday rituals that help ground us. Taking the opportunity to tend to life’s rhythms with practicality and resourcefulness helps Virgo promote healthy self-care routines that fill their cup, so that ultimately, they have more to give.

In the well-meaning intention of this sign to perfect the details, busy thoughts can tip into worries and overly analytical, critical tendencies; sometimes directed at others and/or themselves. Remember this Virgo, we need your helpful, diligent approach but learning to go with the flow, lessening the pressure on yourself – and even asking others for help when you need it – is important too.

Capricorn (21st December – 19th January) *

We step into Capricorn season at winter solstice, when nature is underground, conserving energy. We know Capricorn as a tropical (or in modern astrology cardinal) sign signifying a turning point in the seasons, bringing us into a time of strategy and planning for when brighter days return.

This is an enduring energy, ruled by Saturn, a planet known for its epic boundary setting but also for bringing great wisdom. Depicted by the intrepid mythical sea goat, Capricorn infuses plans with a practical, solid approach so that dreams can be given substance. This is not a flashy energy, but a focused, efficient, strategic approach, brick by brick, eyes on the end goal.

Capricorn’s resilience and determination are second to none when it comes to achieving what it sets out to do. Even in the face of adversity, a sense of patience, diligence and hard work can aid this sign to overcome challenges. The deep wisdom that Capricorn brings to the table is born from clarity of focus, inner strength that has been tested and an understanding of how to replenish roots so that green shoots come back stronger than ever.

The shadow side to Capricorn can be a tendency towards rigidity and neglecting the emotional self in favour of a more practical focus. Cultivating some emotional connection within themselves and with others can help to remind Capricorn of the softer side to life. Sometimes Capricorn just needs to remember showing vulnerability is not a weakness and that loosening up a little can feel just as good as making a plan.

Remember, every birth chart is unique, so the way these earthy qualities show up for you will depend on your own birth chart placements. We hope this guide inspires you to explore your chart a little more deeply and understand your personal cosmic fingerprint.
