Lammas - The First Harvest Within

Lammas - The First Harvest Within

The First Harvest Within (plus 50% OFF full year journey)

The Wheel of the Year is often seen by some as simply a calendar of seasonal celebrations. Pagan sabbats that speak of a time gone by where our agricultural rites were governed by the sun and moon. A romantic nod to the ancient ways.

As someone completely obsessed with nature’s cycles, for me the wheel is also a map of our inner landscape. It reminds us there is a season for every way of being, and despite it being the height of summer, right now I am grateful for the permission to take a breath.

By early August, the seeds planted during winter and spring have had time to germinate, grow and begin bearing fruit. This is often reflected in our own lives through new insights, relationships, creative projects or personal transformations that are finally becoming visible.

Lughnasadh invites us to pause long enough to recognise them.

It asks us to celebrate not only what has flourished, but also the dedication, resilience and patience that made those harvests possible.

Yet woven into the abundance is another quiet truth.

Although the days are still warm, the turning has begun. The first harvest reminds us that nothing remains at its peak forever. The light slowly starts to soften, nature begins preparing for autumn, and we too are invited into a gentle process of letting go.

This is the threshold between expansion and descent.

Rather than resisting the changing season, Lughnasadh encourages us to embrace it with gratitude, trusting that every cycle of release creates space for new growth to emerge in time.

Take a few moments to reflect:

  • What am I harvesting in my life right now?
  • What deserves celebrating before I move on?
  • What am I ready to release as the seasons begin to turn?
  • Where is life asking me to mature into my next chapter?

Walking with the Air Gateway

Within my own seasonal practice, Lughnasadh is associated with the Air Gateway - the element of breath, communication, inspiration and perspective.

Air reminds us that not every harvest is something we can hold in our hands. Sometimes the greatest gifts are clarity, wisdom, new ideas or the confidence to speak our truth.

Like the late summer breeze carrying seeds towards their next destination, this season invites us to trust that change is not an ending but a continuation of the cycle.

It asks us to breathe deeply, release what has become stagnant, and create space for fresh inspiration before the quieter months arrive.

Three Ways to Honour Lughnasadh

You don't need elaborate ceremonies to celebrate this seasonal turning point. Often the simplest rituals become the most meaningful.

  • Bake or Share Bread: Also know as Lammas, literally means "Loaf Mass," making bread one of the oldest traditions associated with this festival. Baking, sharing or blessing a loaf becomes a simple act of gratitude for the abundance that sustains us.
  • Spend Time with the Land: Visit a field, woodland, coastline or local green space. Notice the berries ripening, grasses turning golden and hedgerows growing heavy with fruit. Observe how nature is already beginning its slow transition towards autumn and consider where that same rhythm is unfolding within your own life.
  • Create a Seasonal Altar: Gather wheat, oats, wildflowers, blackberries, feathers, candles or other treasures collected respectfully from nature. As you build your altar, invite one of these timeless feminine archetypes to accompany your reflections:

The Maga, keeper of mystery, intuition and transformation.

The Queen, embodying confidence, responsibility and the abundance that comes from living in alignment with your values.

The Crone, whose wisdom reminds us that every ending contains the seeds of a new beginning.

Ask yourself:

Which archetype is guiding me through this season of harvest and gentle descent?
There is no right answer - only an invitation to listen.
