The astrological wheel spans twelve signs (or constellations) of the zodiac. As we move through the year, the Sun completes its tour of all the different signs, creating Sun seasons. The Sun seasons of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius arrive at different times of the year, but they all have one element in common, air.

If your Sun sign (also known as your star sign), Moon or rising sign is Gemini, Libra or Aquarius, you may sense the qualities of that particular sign more deeply in your world. It's helpful to explore these zodiac energies so you can begin to understand your own astrological make-up.

What is an air sign in astrology?

Whilst every sign is linked to an element, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are the signs known as the air triplicity. The element of air gives us important information about the nature of this cerebral clique.

Although each expresses air differently, they all share a unique ability to open up new perspectives, exchange ideas and share information. Their energy can act as a breath of fresh air, bringing change, creativity, knowledge and connection wherever it's needed. Each sign also has its shadow side too, but we'll get into that later…

Whilst the element of air tells us much about these signs, there is so much more to delve into. Where each sign falls in the astrological year also tells us something about its unique qualities and how this energy manifests.

Gemini (21st May – 20th June) *

Gemini, ruled by winged messenger Mercury, brings a quick-witted, silver-tongued energy. The mental agility of this sign is talented at embracing different communication styles for different occasions and positively encourages self-expression, connection and collaboration.

The symbolism of Gemini in ancient astrology is rooted in the changing light of the year. Known as a double-bodied (or mutable) sign, Gemini reflects a season of transition – the light is still increasing as we move towards summer, but we know that a shift in light will follow the summer solstice. Gemini is also depicted by the twins in astrology, another pointer towards the dual nature of the sign.

This dual nature is what translates into the adaptable, changing energy that we associate with Gemini. We need this mercurial sign’s lightbulb moments to get things moving and fizzing! A thirst for knowledge and making connections that can open doors are part of this sign’s talents.

The shadow side to this sign can manifest as a battle to discern the information needed, so expert is this sign at considering all parts. Gemini needs to learn to avoid information overload that can sometimes slip into a scattered state of mind. The lesson for this quick-moving energy is often to breathe, take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Cultivate some calm, Gemini – but keep sparkling!

Libra (23rd September – 22nd October) *

Libra’s promise is centred around all that its ruler, Venus, symbolises. As the Goddess of love, she encourages harmony in our relationships, celebrating beauty and seeking justice. Libra often enjoys making heart-led connections and usually exhibits an uncanny ability to read a room and all the relationship dynamics within the first ten minutes of being there!

Libra aspires to an ideal situation of mutual give and take, fairness and diplomacy, asking us to appreciate the flow of beauty all around us, discerning what brings harmony to our environment and what sparks our creativity. Appreciating beauty and the arts can form part of this sign’s make-up and often a strong creative streak colours Libran energy.

This tropical (or cardinal) sign takes us into a turning point of the year as the season of Libra coincides with the autumn equinox, (in the northern hemisphere) a time of equal day and night. The sign of Libra, depicted by the scales, takes on the symbolism of the balance of light and dark and asks whether any recalibration is required in our relationships.

If the scales are tipped too far in one direction, Libra may fall into people pleasing habits and a depletion from over-giving or trying to maintain harmony to the detriment of their own peace. Sometimes Libra needs to reflect on how peaceful they really feel in their relationships and if they aren’t, how they can communicate this honestly.

If this resonates, Libra, remember we love your heart-led approach, but finding true harmony in your relationships does not rest on your shoulders alone, all relationships require give and take. Reserve some of your energy for self-love!

Aquarius (20th January – 17th February) *

When we welcome the freedom of Aquarius season, we are moving up and outwards from the earth energy of Capricorn in the zodiac calendar. Aquarius energy can offer us a blast of new perspective and a beckoning towards change.

Aquarius is a solid (or fixed) sign, reflected by its pragmatic, cool-headed approach. Whilst its modern ruler, Uranus, is happy to shake things up to inspire movement and breakthroughs, its ancient ruler, Saturn, brings a clear, stoic determination to this sign. Together, this co-rulership can give Aquarius the ability to tread an unconventional path with steady conviction. There is no looking back.

Aquarius encourages us to embrace the authentic self, to be unafraid to do things differently and once a path is set, not to deviate. There is often a calling to serve the whole (or the collective) in some way, innovating new ideas, bringing a different perspective or a forward-thinking attitude to the table.

The shadow side to this sign can be an overly detached attitude to emotions and forgetting to listen to the heart’s desires as well as the rational mind. If this resonates, Aquarius, remember to check in with your feelings as well as your razor- sharp mental processes – both carry weight!
